Oh, hell.
Not to make light of the situation (seems pretty life-and-death for the author in question), but I always suspected he'd kick the bucket before he finished the series. Not that he's there yet...but...
This may be the next closest thing.
Just when he'd actually managed to advance the plot for the first time in five books too.
(Yes, I am late to the party. I'd rather see what's goin' on with this series instead)

The latest book in R.R. Martin's series was kinda crappy, if you ask me.
I don't know why authors write books, realize it's too big, and just neatly "halve" the book - publishing one half now and one half a year later.

It wasn't bad - though yes, there was a distinct feel of marching the little Risk armies about until they're where he needs them later. And the division of the book seems to be at least thought through.
I heard him read a Jon Snow chapter in 2003 which didn't make it in which I quite like.
I think it really stems down to which characters you enjoy following the most, and whether they got included.
Bottom line: at least plot happened.
(and guys. Read some Steve Erikson. Its like the Black Company. But bigger. A lot bigger. And meaner.)
