And I thought the tour was hectic.
Warning: This in no way discusses all of what I actually spent the entire week doing.
Sunday: Took a ferry to rural China, in the Pearl River Delta, just south of Guangdong (Canton). Dinner in an 80-year old house that the savings from your stereotypical prairie laundry built, prepared without any running water and barely any lighting handy. It took about five minutes in the family shrine to send the entire village to casually wander by and say hi to Dad.
Monday: Looking at the road your father purportedly nearly got himself killed on as a child, diving under a car to figure out what it looked like underneath. And finding out that yes, even though he's been elsewhere for the last 50-odd years, everyone still remembers that incident.
Tuesday: I can't believe my uncle still doesn't have a flush toilet. Boo to the ubiquitious "squatter." At least the ones further north had a built-in mechanism to er, flush.
I just realized that's not my dad being annoying with the remote. That's the morning news, being clumsily censored.
Wednesday: High-tailed it to Macau. Passport is starting to look kind of interesting. Bright flashy lights down in the casinos. And your mom's cousin just checked you into the executive suite of a posh hotel. Complete with marble everything, and a 42" plasma TV the ownership of which I realize would probably be the life ambition of several people I know. WTF?
Anyways, that's way different from last night.
Thursday: Back in Hong Kong. Sooooo confused right now. Mostly I think it's just that I'm exhausted and a bit stunned we're almost done our three or so weeks here. And trying to figure out whether I just ate too much.
But I can't believe the contrast you get with places just a few hours away...
